                        UNLINKED YODER LINES

                               Part 2

This section presents various miscellaneous Yoder lines. For these folk, either their connections back to an early immigrant groups is not known, or they represent a latter immigration. Each Alpha prefix represents a distinct family. In this section, Alpha prefixes have increased to two digit (i.e. "AC").  When a gap appears in lettering, this generally means a link has been established into one of the major lines, and the family information has been shifted to that major line.

Elias/Elijah Yoder- See YNL 61 http://yodernewsletter.org/ynlpdf/YNL61.pdf for DNA test results which link this fellow to the Samuel Yoder (OH13) line, with a belief that he may well have been a son of Abraham Yoder (OH135).

Thanks to research by Brian W Valenti submitted May 23, 2014 which had added much more details to this line:

AC- Elijah Yoder    b. 7/9/1803   d. 6/7/1880 bur. Jacobs Church, Schuylkill Co.,PA.

(our first record of this gentleman indicated that he m1. Kitty  Reed  (1802-    ) (per B. Valenti - Catherine Reed is mentioned in the will and in the Estate records as an executor of Henry Reed’s affairs but nowhere do I find that these two are ever wed. Catherine was also Henry Reed’s wife’s name and I believe her and Elijah Yoder were the executors. Also from what I found today Elijah was married to Anna Margaret Reed or Ried . So the Catherine or Kitty Reed must have been someone's assumption since Elijah and Catherine were executors of Henry Reed's estate. Elijah is only mentioned as son in law, never says who he intermarried with in his will or estate records. With that said the whole Kitty Reed as first wife could be deleted.-B. Valenti)

      m. Anna M. (Margaret) ______ (6/6/1811-2/13/1885) She was baptized at St Jacobs On June 7 1811. (ANNA MARGARET I BELIEVE WAS ANNA MARGARET REED MENTIONED AS MARGARET REED IN HENRY REED’S AFFAIRS. BAPTISM RECORDS SHOW ANNA MARGARET AS THE MOTHER FOR ALL OF ELIJAH’S CHILDREN.-B. DNA Testing shows this line matches the Amish Yoder profile, many family trees on ancestry.com show his as the son of George Yoder and Fannie Kurtz, see:  http://www.yodernewsletter.org/ynlpdf/YNL45.pdf wich is a reasonable hypothesis, but we have seen no firm evidence.

(obituary 1847-George W. Yoder-1934-

George W. Yoder was born in Seneca County, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1847 and died

Sept. 24, 1934 aged 87 years, seven months and 18 days. When he was eight years of age he came with his widowed mother, four sisters and three brothers to Williams County where they settled on a wooded farm, three miles east and one mile south of Edon.  At the age of 16 when the Civil war had broken out he enlisted with Company H, the third Ohio Cavalry where he served two years and six months, with the Union Army with which he endured the hardships of camp life and danger on the battlefields. After the war he came home to the family and in the year 1874 he married his wartime sweetheart, Miss Adaline Corbette.  To this union were born two sons, Charles of Montpelier and Adam of Pioneer. In 1880 he moved with his family to a farm which he had bought just west of Pioneer where he lived a very progressive and successful life.He was a man of sturdy character ever mindful of the welfare of others and always ready to aid in time of need.He leaves to mourn their loss, one aged sister, Cilicia Haynes in Washington state; two sons, Charles and Adam, three grandsons, George, Lorin and Ralph and four great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.  Funeral services at the home, Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J.F. Slough burial in Floral Grove cemetary.-- Karen Newberry kmnewberry@hotmail.com)

("Dear Chris,---   I have resolved my problems with the tie between the Eppenheimers and Yoders. I recently bought a book "The Ball Cousins" by Margaret B. Kinsey. In that book the marriage of Martha Eppenheimer to William Yoder is documented.

Martha was a relative of Joseph Ball who had left a large sum of money at the

time of his death. He had no will, so the lawers traced down all his relative

of which one was Martha Eppenheimer. In 1858 DeSelding District of Columbia

Deed, filed by Charles DeSelding, lawer, showed the marriage and that they

lived in Lancaster PA. The 1850 census for Lancaster shows William, 46,

plasterer, Martha 48, Levi 19, Anna 17, Margaret 14, and Mary 11.   So I guess

that takes out that blank spot in your files. O by the way Martha received

$6.85 as her part of the estate.--Wes Leiser,Wesleiser@aol.com)

Son of Jacob Yoder and Barbara Shallenberger (21 May 1734- died 1822), see feature in YNL 29. According to http://www.angelfire.com/pa4/familyalso/shallenberger.html, they married in 1751. This link also presents the ancestry of Barbara Shallenberger.

In Heidelberg Twp Berks Co, Pa. Jacob Yoder, previous of Earle Twp, Lancaster County, bought land  in 1763. Jacob purchased his land from Henry Martin, heir to one Nicolas Martin for the sum of 450 pounds.

This Jacob appears in various tax lists for the township, including:

1779- Jacob Yoder 100 acres 2 horses 7 cattle Tax 700

1784- Jacob Yoder 140 acres 4 horses 4 cattle 4 sheep

Jacob Yoder 1.5.0

The Berks County Will Book shows that when Jacob died, his son Jacob was named administrator of his estate in 1815.(10) The Recorder of Deeds indicates that "Land warranted to Nicholas Martin Nov. 1746 & 25 Oct 1751, conveyed to Jacob Yoder in 1763 who died intestate..leaving unto his heirs...Jacob Yoder and Barbara Yoder."

That this Barbara was an unmarried daughter is attested by the record of her estate in 1822, when Jacob Yoder her brother was charged with its administration.(1)2 (Strangely enough, the same year Barbara (Rupp) Yoder died.)

24 July 1902, p. 6 Yoder. -- Am 10. Juli in Ashland, Ohio Elisabeth Yoder geb. Rees.

Yoder. -- On July 10th in Ashland, Ohio Elisabeth Yoder b. Rees. She was born on September 26, 1833 near Albesweiler, Rheinpfalz, Germany. On March 1, 1861, she married Heinrich Yoder. Soon after, they emigrated to America and settled near Hayesville, Ohio, where they lived in all Godliness. Brother Yoder was called home on April 18, 1900. Last April, the deceased moved to Ashland with her two daughters. However, she did not need this new home for long, because she died there on July 10 at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 14 days. In her early youth, she had already made the covenant with the Lord by joining a Mennonite congregation. She remained faithful to this covenant until the end. The funeral ceremony took place on July 12 and was attended by Pred. J. W. Kliewer of Wadsworth, Ohio. Pred. Philpott of the Methodist Church in Ashland and Pred. Steinhage of the Reformed Church in Spencerville, Ohio participated in the celebration. The deceased was laid to rest in the Hayesville cemetery at the side of her husband.

DOTTERER, MATHIAS H., p. 1195 Surnames:

DOTTERER, DOTTERO, TODDEROW, IMBODY, MUTHART, HERB, GERHARD, ANTHONY, SCHOENLY, HEYDT, WELLER, GESCHWINDT, SEIDEL, YERGER, HENRY, ANGSTADT

Mathias H. Dotterer, who is engaged in the grocery and general merchandise business at No. 1755 Centre Avenue, Reading, Pa., was born in District township, Berks county, Dec. 26, 1861, and is descended from (I) Mathias Dotterer, the emigrant ancestor of the family, through (II) Mathias (2), (III) Daniel, (IV) Mathias and (V) David.

(I) Mathias Dotterer, whose name of the passenger list is given as Mattheus Dotter, came to America on the ship "Jacob," Captain Adolph De Grove, from Amsterdam, last from Shields, England, qualifying at Philadelphia, Oct. 2, 1749. On the same ship were Nicklaus and Martin Dotter, who may have been brothers, or sons over sixteen years of age. His son, Mathias (1744-1827) was about five years old at the time, and because of his tender years his name would not appear on the passenger list.

(II) Mathias Dotterer, son of Mathias, born Jan 22, 1744, became a pioneer of Lower Berks county. His name is variously spelled Dotterer, Dottero, and Toderrow. On the red sandstone that marks his grave just south of the Hill Church, is the following inscription " Mathias Dotterer, son of Mathias and Catharine, Born Jan 22, 1744, Died June 30, 1827, aged 83 years, 5 months and 8 days." His wife is buried at his side, her grave being marked by the following inscription "Anna Maria, daughter of Adam and Catharine Imbody, and wife Mathias Dotterer. She was born May 17, 1743, married 1765, and lived in holy wedlock over sixty years. She had 2 sons, 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren at the time of her death, which occurred Feb. 24, 1825, aged 81 years 9 months and 17 days." They had two sons: Daniel was executor of his father's will (on record in German in Will Book 6, p. 99) ; and Mathias.

(III) Daniel Dotterer, son of Mathias, was born July 4, 1766, and he died Sept 13, 1844, in the seventy-ninth year of his age. He lived in Earl township, where he owned a farm, and he also owned a tract in Rockland township, bequeathing the latter to his son Henry in his will made Oct. 29, 1834. This will, probated Oct. 14, 1844, is on record in Will Book 9, p. 18: Executors, his son Mathias and Daniel. In the Will Index his name is spelled Daniel Dottero. He married Barbara Muthart (born June 28, 1763, died Dec. 3, 1843) and their children were: Mathias, John, Daniel (1792-1840), Jacob, George, Henry (who was given the tract of land in Rockland township), Susanna, Catharine and Margaret (whose will, made Dec. 5, 1865 was recorded Dec. 10, 1866).

(IV) Mathias Dotterer, son of Daniel, was born in 1787. He engaged in farming in Washington township, where he owned a 114-acre tract, now in the property of M. G. Gerhard. His death occurred in 1871, and he was buried at Hill Church. He was twice married. His first wife, Catharine Muthart, born Dec. 21, 1799, died Aug. 23, 1834. Mr. Dotterer married (second) Catharine Herb. He was the father of fourteen children: Isaac, David, Jonathan, Aaron, George, Joseph, Israel (had three children), John, Mathias, Abraham, Henry (1825-1856), William, (1825-1903), Anna (m. Edward Anthony, of Dale, Pa.) and Catharine (m. William Schoenly, of Boyertown).

(V) David Dotterer, son of Mathias, was born in Washington township in 1823. He was early trained to farming and followed that calling as long as he was engaged in active labor. He received his education in the pay schools taught by German teachers, and he can give interesting accounts of his early experiences. He taught school at Weikel's Hill, the school being held in a spring house. He owned two farms in Washington township, one of sixty-five acres and one of forty. He is now making his home with his son James near Heydt's schoolhouse. He married Magdalena Heydt, daughter of John and Magdalena (Weller) Heydt. She died in 1896. Their children were: James, who lives in Washington township; Mathias H.; John, on a farm near Sassamansville; and Manasses, who died in 1905 at the age of thirty-five.

(VI) Mathias H. Dotterer, son of David, was reared upon the home farm, and educated in the public schools and the Keystone State Normal School. At the age of eighteen years, he began clerking in the store at Hill Church, for John Dotterer, and later he clerked for J. P. Geschwindt, in Longswamp township, and after that he was employed in a similar capacity by William F. Seidel, at Bowers Station. In 1885 he entered the mercantile business for himself, at Bechtelsville, where he conducted a general store for twenty years. He was very successful, and the people of the town showed him high esteem. He was one of the organizers of the borough of Bechtelsville, and was its first justice of the peace. He also served as school director for three terms. He was elected treasurer of the borough many terms, and upon his removal from the borough resigned. In April, 1906, he sold out his stock, good will and fixtures to William R. Yerger, of Friedensburg, (who later sold to William A. Henry), and that spring moved to Reading, where enjoyed a rest until the following October, when he opened a grocery store at No. 400 South Fifteenth street, his present location. He carries a fine line of groceries and fresh vegetables, and his stand is justly popular.

In politics, Mr. Dotterer is a Democrat. On Nov. 29, 1884, he married Torinda Gerhard, daughter of Daniel and Eliza (Angstadt) Gerhard, of Longswamp township, and they have four children: Winfield S., a bookkeeper at Reading; Raymond A., clerking for his father; and Lloyd J. and Viola M.

From YNL51- “The building pictured in the April 2007 YNL is located in Evendale, Juniata County, Pa. It was a general store built in 1874. It was built in anticipation of being a hotel for a railroad that was planned to go through this valley. The railroad never materialized but the store apparently operated at least through 1968. It is a bit run down  and now contains apartments. A book called The Celebration gives the names of the proprietors. One of these was John H. Yoder. Following him, John’s daughter Mary and son-in-law Banks W. Nace ran the store.

John H Yoder was the son of Moses and Eliza Yoder (see the gravestone photo elsewhere in this issue). He was born in Lewisburg, Union County, Pa. At a young age he moved to Liverpool, Perry County, Pa. He tried farming for a while  and then moved to Evendale where he purchased the General Merchandise Store. While operating this store he was also the postmaster from 1900 to its closing in 1912.

John married Sarah E. Rowe on Jun. 2, 1878. They had three children: Bessie (died at a young age); Fred R. and Mary J. John died in Liverpool on Feb. 17, 1932. He was survived by his two children and grandchildren Dr. Donald Yoder, Dr. Howard Yoder, and Geneva Nace.---Ron Yoder, Thompsontown, Pa.

BZ- Jost Jotter

Have been searching for info about a Yost Jotter/Yotter, d. Bushkill Twp

Harry Werner <HCWERNER@aol.com>

Denver, Co USA

Chris;  Thank you for your very prompt response, however before we get our

hopes too high, I submit that Yost & wf Christine (Ref Dryland Records) may

not be the Jost that I am looking for ( I have been thru the route of Dryland

Rec.).

Working backwards in time I submit the following (my comments in Para.).

1. Obits; Source "Index to Subject of Obituaries abstracted from Der

Christlicher Botschaft der Evang. Kirche." (Denver PL) ;Issue dated 16 Feb

1861: d. Bushkill Twp. 27 Jan 1861 Heinrich Werner age 90y, 5m, 10d. Issue

dated 9 Feb 1853: Maria Werner (Jotter) d. 8 Jan 1853 by Nazareth age 88y

less 5 d. (Have copies)

2. Tombstone; Hamans Churchyard Bushkill Twp: Heinrich Werner b. 17 Aug 1770,m. to Maria geborne Jotter 61y 11m, d. 27 Jan 1861 aged 90y 5m 10d. (Date of m. 24 Feb 1791 ??). Anna Maria (JOTTER) Werner b. in the year 1765 d. Jan 1853. (Have visited & have site photos)

3. NortCo DB C7 pg 433 dated 4 Mar 1845. Henry Werner & wf Anna Maria granted 76p strict to Evan. Assn of Bushkill Twp. adj HW other land. (Have copy)

4. NortCo DB A3 pg 537 dated 4 Apr 1801 Henry Werner was grantee of 89a 135p Plainfield (Bushkill) Twp. Also Nortco DB F3 pg 30 dated 13 Apr 1810, 6a 63p was added. (Have copies of deeds. This land adj the Nazareth tract, incls the Cem. grant. Have it precisely located on current survey maps).

5. 1800 Census: Moore Twp. Henry Werner; m, un 10, 3, 26-45, 1( Henry), 45 & up, 1(Jost Jotter?); f, un 10, 2, 26-45, 1 (Anna Maria).

6. NortCo DB F2 pg 411 dated 1 Sep 1800. Jost Jotter granted 65a 25p Moore

Twp to Henry Werner (s-i-l) for 16pd & life maint. (Have copy)

7. Marriage Henry Werner & Anna Maria Jotter Feb 1791 (see above)

8. 1790 Census: Moore Twp pg 177; Yost JUTHER 2-X-3 ( Jost + male above 16; wf + 2 fm incl Anna Maria & sister?). (Family Jost, wf, 1 son, 2 dau). Henry Werner was with father Jacob in Plainfield  (Bushkill) Twp.

9. Moorestown Ch. Rec. Pg 21, Maria Gotter sp Aug 1790. Pg 19, Anna Maria

Jotter sp Jun 1789. pg 18, Maria Jotter sp Dec 1788. pg 17 Maria Jotter sp

Oct 1787. pg 16 Maria Jotter sp Mar 1787. Communion lists (FHL 20350) pages 58, 63, 65, 69, 71, 73: Apr 1774-Nov 1793 Eva Iottern, Eva Jotter, Eva Catharine wf of Jost etc. Eva Catharine Lutheran, Jost "of Reformed side". (many entries, have copies of pages).

10. Warrant Register: NortCo Y-23 Jost YEOTTER  65a Moore Twp dated 9 Nov

1785. Not returned & patented until 1826.

The above data suggests to me that my JOST JOTTER was probably b. abt

1735-45. Known dau. Anna Maria b. 1765. The Dryland Jost is not supported by the above.      The Iost Iotter & wf Eva Catrine m. Lebanon 1756 from the Stoever Records may be the person I'm looking for. Surprisingly however, the only surname similarity in Leba/Daup/Lanc deed records is the Peter Yetter/Yeter who does not have a family resembling that which I am looking for. CF- John Franklin Yoder (c12/1834 Mo-2/20/1921) single, parents born in S.C.

(Data from: Bob Balmain-balman@afes.com- Oct.98) My husband, Bob, and I contacted you regarding your inquiry on John F. Yoder.  We are in California, and are researching a gold mining area called Iowa Hill, which is in Placer County.  It is located about 50 miles from Sacramento, in the foothills.  We only have a small amount of information on John: Placer County Republican, 10/28/1885: Real estate transaction:  J. F. Yoder to B. S. Buckman 1/2 interest in the Alta Quartz Mine. Canada Hill District, $2000.00 In the same paper: " Yoder and Buckman in town (Auburn) from the meadows. Good progress in their mine.  Shaft down 65 feet, tunnel 360 ft.  300 tons of quartz on the dump. the ledge is 28 inches wide at bottom of shaft."In 1887 and 1888 he appears as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Iowa Hill, the Ionic Lodge #121.  He still shows up in 1893 and 1894 as a member, and officer of that lodge.  1900 Census from Iowa HIll:  John Yoder, head of household. white, male, born 12/1834, Missouri, Single, Father and mother both from South Carolina, Occupation: goldminer.

1900 index of Iowa Hill, John Franklin Yoder, age 66

1902 index of Iowa Hill, John Franklin Yoder, age 67.

1910  "    "      "       , age 74, single, miner...his name shows up through the 1920

index.

From California death record index, Calif. State Library: Yoder, John, died 2/20/21, age 95 (sic), State file number 7091.  Died Placer County.

Note from Balmain's:-Nov. 2000

"I checked at the County Archives today, and couldn't find Enoch Yoder yet, at least on the assessments.  If I find anything, I'll let you know.  Bob thinks he may have seen his name in the Gleeson Diarys that we transcribed covering 1882, and 1886 thur 1888.  I'll try to check there as I have time. I found John in the assessment for 1885 and 1886.  He is being assessed for the Quartz mining claim.  It is near Ralston Dam at the lower end of what is known as the Meadows on the middlefork of the middle fork of the American River called Alta, also 1 watch $50. 1 graded horse $75.  1885 states it is at French Meadows.  This is about 30 miles out of Forest Hill, and is now a popular camping and fishing lake.  in 1885 he also had a colt value $30. John doesn't appear in the 87  or 89  assessments.  perhaps that was when he

was working for the Iowa Hill Canal Company. "

Yoder DNA Project test result on Jan. 21, 2009 confirms the line below shares a common ancestor with the Steiffisburg Joders. A connection to a German Yeater line therefore becomes suspect. A “new unlinked Yoder” line is confirmed. It’s possible there has been some confusion with the Andrew Yeater in Greene Co, Pa. (code “U” in the first unlinked Yoder file) (some sources show him to be one of the sons of Johannes Yetter-Anna Margaret Korst line- see T. Vernon Anderson data which says Johannes Yeater1,2 was born on April 1, 1724 in Stuttgart, Wertburg, Germany. Immigarted on the Restoration, and died in June 1805 in Derry Twp, Mifflin Co, PA.). Data by Lycoming County researcher Harold Bower on Rootsweb also refers to the Johannes Jacob- Andrew- Andrew Lycoming county lineage.

Letter by Albert Jotter. Madison Neb. Jan 25 1970

Dear sis Jody got your letter the other day and today is Sunday a long day so I'll drop you a line . Jeane did a good job looking up our dads back ground I new most of the deal about the deaths and our mother being buried in the M E Church , Father Blair was was the Priest there at that time and when we came there the church was locked . That’s why I did not go to no Catholic Church. I never did forget that deal I also remember Effie Randall and her Dad, he was the carpenter at the Fort. Effie married Andrew Jelly. I was there that night I saw what happened, they had a hearing at the officers Headquarters and they called it an accident but it did not look like an accident to me. The gun was hanging on the wall and we were sitting. Helen , Mrs. Blyle and Mother and me were on an army cot and Effie got up behind us and got the gun out of the holster and it went off.  Why did she take the gun out of the holster at all we Had not been there 15 Min till it happened , the gun was hanging on the wall in the holster there was something fishy about that and after things settled down she would ride past our place with a gun strapped on . Yes our folks had quite a lot of money I heard that from a Banker by  the name of Sparks , our mother did her business with him. The Swartz family and Max Pertel got most of our money. I think Jrna knows all about it but he won’t say anything. Yes I remember John Steffer he was Corral Boss, Ed Sears was harness maker and John Ross was the black smith, I also remember that I went to a colored teacher I don't know his name. I'll mail the clipping back to you in case Jeane wants it. Our weather here wonderful now. But it has been cold, but not much      snow. I was wondering if they would want some pictures. We have here      at the museum at Valentine when you come over this summer we could      drive up then and take them along and if they wanted them we could      leave them there.      Ruby is not so well, she has trouble sleeping, her legs pain her, I think it      sis the Nerves in the legs as for Opal I don't know what to think about      that girl she spends money right and left but she has it so what, let her      spent it its is not any of my business she is old enough to run her own      business. Opal and Ruby don't get along at all, Ruby tries to tell her what      to do and that don't work , Ruby is like her mother she wants every body      to do like she wants them to do. ruby has quite a temper she don't stop to      think she just says what she thinks and that is no good I am feeling fine      but I am sore. Yet it will take a little time I'll be fine by the time spring      comes and fishing time comes I could tell a lot about Fort Niobrara. I      remember a lot of things those and also the names of people there that      used to be there . Well so long for now and take care.      I remain Your Brother Albert Jotter

John F Jotter probably came to the Mohawk Valley Columbia co. NY

between 1860 and 1870.      His birth information came from a Petition to join the IOOF lodge in      Valentine Nebraska . On the petition it lists his birth Dec. 30th 1865 in      Columbia Co. NY and occupation Teamster. The record shows that he      took the first degree on March 10 1903 and the 2nd degree on April 7      1903 . Hes passed away on April 26 1903 so did not take the Master      Masons Degree. Only Master Masons are entitled to have a Masonic      funeral so of course he did not have this.

     Fort Niobrara Nebraska

Fort Niobrara was established in 1880 as the military post for the      Rosebud Reservation in Dakota. This reservation was constituted in 1870      for Chief Spotted Tails band of Brule Sioux, and, in the summer of that      year the Indians began moving from the old Spotted Tail Agency on      White Clay Creek to the new location about hundred miles east. Camp      Sheridan, which had been the military post for the Spotted Tail agency,      was abandoned and much of its equipment and supplied brought to the      Rosebud.

An official army order dated April 22 1880 provided for the      establishment of a military post for the new reservation. this location      chosen was a point on the Niobrara River in Cherry Co. about four miles      east and north of the present town of Valentine. The post was named      Forst Niobrara and the first officer in charge was Major John J Uphan of      the Fifth US cavalry and Company B of the Ninth infantry accompanied      him to aid in establishment of the Fort.      The first buildings were of adobe brick a suitable clay for which was      bound nearby. Later, frame structures were erected and the fort enlarged      to provide quarters for a regiment. The military reserve too, was      increased to provide quarters for a regiments. The military reserve too ,      was increased until it comprised fifty four sections of land. The plan of the      Fort followed the same general pattern of the other frontier post, in the      arrangement of its buildings around a rectangular parade ground.      A visitor to Fort Niobrara in 1884, four years after its founding, wrote      that the post was "Like a Pleasant little village of nicely built houses, most      of them of adobe brick and arranged on three sides of a square. The      officers homes on the south side, all cottage houses, but large and      handsomely built. On the east are Public buildings, chapel, library, lecture      room and entertainment hall. Along the north are the soldiers quarters and      in the rear are various utility buildings and the stables , one for the gray      and another for the sorrel horses about one hundred of each, and also      about seventy mules.

In the early days of Fort Niobrara the surrounding territory was not yet      settled and the garrison found it a lonely spot. For the first year mail and      supplies were brought by ox team freighting wagons. from Neligh,      Nebraska at that time the end of the line of the Fremont, Elkhorn, and      Missouri Valley railroad and the closest rail point. By 1882, however, the      road reached Thatcher only a few miles away and the following year      came to Valentine.,

This ended the supply problem except for local hauling from Valentine to      the Fort.      To the Eary settlers of the county the military post proved a tremendously      helpful asset. Here they found a ready market for grain, hay and cord      wood, as well as for meat, dairy and poultry products. wives of settlers      too, helped out the family budget by doing laundry for the troops. And,      probably more important than these direct benefits was the Sence of      security which the presence of the soldiers gave, and the knowledge that      the fort would be a place of refuge in the event of and Indian outbreak      from the Rosebud Reservation over the Dakota line to the north. But      there was no trouble with the Brule Sioux. However, after the turbulent      plans wars of the 1860's and 1870's civilians and soldiers were      understandably nervous and Indian scares based on unfounded rumors      cropped up occasionally. It was reported that more than once the soldiers      at Fort Niobrara had kept their horses saddled for days at a time ready to      repel and attack that never materialized. Not until the winter of 1890-91      was there real trouble anywhere in the Indian country.      Glimpses of social life at the fort are Given in her book, Vanished      Arizona, by Martha Summerhays, wife of First Lt. John Summerhays of      Eight Infantry who was stationed there in 1887-88. Experiences with      bitter cold weather are detailed together with reminiscences of the      brighter side, as for example, she wrote, We could not complain of our      fare, however, for our larder hung full of all sorts of delicate and delicious      things brought in by the farmers, which we were glad to buy. Parrie      chickens, young pigs, venison and ducks, all hanging to be used as      desired.      And again: We had an excellent amusment hall with a fine floor for      dancing. The chapel was at one end and a fairly good stage at the other.

We had a good string orchestra of twenty or more pieces and a series of      weekly dances were inaugurated.      Musicales and theatricals were also given by talent recruited among the      personnel of the post. Admission was charged to raise funds to by      scenery and other supplies for the productions and the neighboring      frontier towns of Valentine came riding and driving over the Parrie and      across the old bridge of the Niobrara River, to see the plays.      Fort Niobrara, because of its remote location, had few noted visitors      from outside. As at all army posts the garrison underwent many changes     in both officers and enlisted men. As a young lieutenant John J Pershing      was stationed there for a short time in 1891 following the Wounded Knee      Massacre. Another young lieutenant at the post on the Niobrara was John      M. Stotsenburg who served as colonel of the First Nebraska Regiment in     Spanish American War and was killed in action during the Philippine      campaign.

In 1890 the last great Indian scare came to Northern Nebraska. Through      the exciting years events built up reaching a climax in the so called Battle      of Wounded Knee. The Sioux on the great Pine Ridge Reservation      dissatisfied and hopeless, robbed of adequate rations by unscrupulous or     incompetent agents and greedy contractors, turned in desperation to a     new fanatical ritualistic religion. This was the Gost Dance- Messiah craze.     Of the total Indian population at Pine Ridge only a comparatively small     number participated. But the timid agent became alarmed and asked for     military protection, intimating that the Indians were out of control.     When this word came, the alarm spread like a Parrie fire among the      scattered settlers on the North Nebraska frontier. The Military posts     were alerted and supplied and reinforcements were rushed to them and     preparations made for any eventuality. Fort Niobrara became one of the     principal points of supply and troops from the post were ordered to the     field.      Then, on Dec 29 on Wounded Knee Creek, 1890, during the process of      disarming Chief Big Foots band, which comprised the bulk of the Ghost      Dancers, a shot was fired at the soldiers, troops of the Seventh Cavalry,      and the fight was on. Partially disarmed the Indians had no chance and the      engagement became a massacre in which men, women and children were

indiscriminately shot down while fleeing up the ravines seeking safety.

Following the Wounded knee affair rumors spread that the whole Sioux      nation might rise in revolt. The Nebraska National Guard was called out      and sent to various points along the Dakota border, and additional federal

Toups sent in. But beyond a few minor skirmishes there was no further

trouble.      Gen. Nelson A Miles was put in charge of the whole operation and under     his direction the situation gradually calmed down.

After the excitement was over, Fort Niobrara returned to its usual peace     time routine until abandonment in Oct of 1906. With the opening of the     Rosebud to settlers it was felt that the need for a post at that location was     no longer in existence. A 16,000 acre tract of Military reservation was     retained for a national game preserve and the rest thrown open for     settlement. A small Museum and office bui8ldings of the game reserve are     maintained on the site of the old post and small herds of buffalo, elk, deer     and antelope roam over the terrain where cavalry horses once held sway. ___________________________________________________________________
