Some Rhoads Descendants of Yost Yoder of Oley, Berks County, Pa.
by Rodney F. Rhoads- YNL 30
The granddaughter of one of the first two Yoder immigrants to the
new world, Yost Yoder of Steffisburg, Switzerland who settled in Oley,
Berks county,PA was Elizabeth Yoder ,born to his son John Yost Yoder and
Catherine Euster(Oyster, Luster) in Oley township in December 26, 1751.
Elizabeth married Matthias Roth (Rhoads) of Amity Township, Berks
County,PA . The exact date of marriage is not currently known. Seven
children were born to this union.
The Rhoads family who became linked to the Yoders arrived in
America in 1717 at Philadelphia. In Wuerttemburg, specifically in Bonfeld,
  the family surname was ROTH.
Johann Jacob Roth (Jr) was a first settler in Amity township, Berks
county, PA and purchased land there immediately upon arrival in 1717. His
second son, Johann Jacob Roth (III), born in Bonfeld in 1711. remained in
Amity and married Anna Elizabeth ________ prior to 1738. Their son
Matthias, b. 1742 married Elizabeth Yoder and had children: Mary, Esther,
  Jacob, Joseph, Abraham, John.
It is interesting to note that by this time all parties were using their
surname of RHOADS ,although in the church they still continued to be
recorded as ROTH. For example, the church records of the German
Reformed Church -Schwartzwald -Rev. William Boos - has a burial ...ROTH,
  Matthias, his wife-December 21,1751-December 6, 1790 39 years,less 20
days... (Elizabeth Yoder Rhoads). and also had a baptism of note: Parent-
Matthias Roth- Joseph, born Nov. 12,1785, baptized October 21,1787.
  Sponsor, the father.
Matthias Rhoads served as Lt. Col. in Col. Jacob Weavers's
battalion, 5th Battalion Berks County Militia in 1777 and was present at the
battle of Brandywine and probably at the route in Paoli, serving on
duty in the Great Valley afterwards. Matthias died in 1804, some 14 years
after his wife Elizabeth Yoder. The siblings were then scattered to the
environs of a neighboring county. Joseph Rhoads, the author's
antecedent, was still a minor technically, at this time and Jacob Griesemer,
his sister's husband was appointed guardian at his request. Joseph had
followed, with the death of his father, several of his brothers and sisters to
Northumberland county. Note also, that Matthias Rhoads had George Yoder
and son John Yoder, "trusty friend" appointed as executors to his will dated
  1804.
Joseph Rhoads was known locally as "the German Major" because
he served in the War of 1812 and finally achieved the rank of Major with the
local militia. Joseph was mentioned in the will of his grandfather John Yost
Yoder which was probated April 13,1812 in Reading.
The Yoder family history has touched that of the Rhoads family in
many ways and we are the better for it with the inspiration of those rugged
"Schweizers" and their travails and accomplishments cited lovingly in the
Yoder newsletter for the benefit of all of us.

Thanks to your Yoder newsletter, I was able to trace things back to Yost
Yoder from my great grandfather, Horace R. Yoder 1866-1943 who is buried
in the cemetery at Longswamp, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
I am 68 years old and met him often when I was a child visiting with my
parents and my grandparents. He and his wife, Emma (Pilgert) Yoder lived
in a hose next to the railroad tracks in Mertztown, Longswamp Twp., Pa.
Here are the names of the children that Horace and Emma had. The
youngest one died in April of 2003, and she was the last of her
siblings. Horace and Emma's children and their children are additional
information for you since I did not see this information in any
  publications.
  1. Henry W. Yoder(My gandfather) December 1, 1889 to May 10, 1969.
Married to Annie (Gehringer) Yoder. She lived from JUne 9, 1893 to
November 15, 1983. Both are buried in the same cemetery in Longswamp as
Henry's parents and his grandfather who also was named Henry.
  2. Mahlon Yoder also buried in the same cemetery as my grandfather and
  his parents at Longswamp.
3.Paul Yoder who died in the late 1940s or early 1950s and is buried at
the cemetery in Topton,Pa. He was married to Mary Yoder and they had one
child Vivian who married Emmett Miller. They were either separated or
divorced. They had two children, Beverly and Kieth Miller. After Paul's
death, Mary found a position with the Milton Hershey Vocational School
in Hershey, Pa. and moved there with Beverly and Kieth. She lived at the
school and her grandchildren went to school there and grew up there. I
don't know when Mary died or where she is buried.
4.Eva Yoder lived in Allentown and married a man named Bill Stang who
had been an electrical engineer with Pennsylvania Power and Light
Company. I do not know when she was born or whenshe died or where she is
buried, but I do know it isn't in Longswamp.
5.Jennie Yoder married a man we called Zimmie and his last name was
Sell. They owned a tavern in Macungie, PA. and I assume they are buried
there somewhere. I do not know when they died.
6.Evelyn Yoder married Addison Hieter and lived in Topton. They had two
children, Donald and Goldie. Addison died in the 1940s and Evelyn
remarried to a man named Max Croddy. They did not have any children
between them. Evelyn is buried beside her first husband, burried in the Longswamp Union  Cemetary. (“My name is Adam A Hieter. I have an update for you on Evelyn Yoder (my grandmother).Evelyn Husbands name Adam Andrew Hieter not Addison. They had 4 children  Donald , Goldie , Shirley and Jonas Adam ( my father). All of the children except Goldie are now deceased. I hope this helps you in your yoder geneology quest.-- Adam6335@aol.com, Dec. 3,2004)
7.Nieda Yoder was the youngest and lived from 1910 until she died April
15, 2003. She was married to a man named Warren Reppert who died about
20 years ago. They had one daughter, Meliisa who married Barry Haydt.
They live either in Kutztown or in Topton these days.
  8. My mother was the only child of Henry W. and Annie Yoder. Her name is
Mae Eva (Yoder) Erb. She was born December 26, 1914 and is still living.
She married my father, George F.R. Erb of Kutztown, Pa on December 31,
1934. My father lived from October 18, 1913 to January 31, 1989 and is
buried on Hope Cemetery in Kutztown near his parents and siblings. There
is a plot next to him for my mother when it is needed.
  9. Mae and George F.R. Erb had four children. George H. C. Erb, this
writer, Born June 11, 1935; Lee W. Erb born April 20, 1937; Mary L. Erb
born April 27, 1939 and died in March of 1982; Patricia L. Erb born July
  9, 1940.
9.1 I have been living in Morgan Hill, California since 1977. I am
married but have only stepchildren and step grands and step great grands. No
  natural children.
9.2 Lee is married to Carol (Hauck) Erb and lives in Kutztown, Pa.
They had two boys, Eric and Mark who are in the Kutztown Area School System. Both are married, but only Eric has two children Patrick and Daniel Erb.
9.3 Mary was married to John C. Schaeffer and they had three
children, Tim, Bonnie and David. Tim is married to Tammie and they live near the Topton Home with a Mertztown RFD address. Tim and Tammie have two daughters who recently graduated from high school and are not married.
Bonnie died in November 2002 from leukemia. She was 39 years
old when she died. She and her husband, Brian Tobin Phd, lived in Macon, Georgia and her remains are in Georgia. They had two children, Stacey age 5 and Daniel age 2 years.
David is married and lives in our old(Erb) home in Kutztown, Pa
with his wife Tonia. They have four children who are all young and live at home.
9.4 Patricia married Lee Leibensperger and lives in Allentown. Pa.
Lee died about 8 years ago and Patricia(Patsy) has not remarried. Lee and Patricia had a daughter, Pennie who is married to Al Barron has a preschool age daughter, Cecelia Barron.
  10. My grandfather and his parents were Lutherans. My mother was also
Lutheran until she married my father who was German Reformed. we, their
children, all grew up in St. John's Reformed Church in Kutztown. The German Reformed church merged with the Evangelicals in the 1930s and with the Congregationals in the 1960s and is now called the United
  Church of Christ.
There are no Mennonite or Amish folks in our ancestry either from the
Yoder side or the Erb side as far as I can tell. I have been able to trace the Erb lineage back to Casper Erb who came to America in the1730s
from the Wittemburg-Baden area of Germany.
I hope this information helps you continue the Yoder lineage from Horace
through what I know of his children and their offspring. George Erb

Our family geneaology (done by my father, but the Yoder's are my mother's family) indicates that Nathan and Phoebe's son was George H. Yoder (1860-1933). George Yoder married Frances M. Funnell (1865-1953)in 1884. Their son was Harry Jay Yoder, my maternal grandfather. His brother was Clayton Phelps Yoder (author of 'Delaware Canal Journal,' Bethlehem, PA, 1972), and went by the name "Bill." Clayton P. married but had no children. Harry Jay's other child was also named Clayton. He, too, married but remained without issue, hence no male Yoder DNA. I trying to find how my ancestor, MARY YODER, ties into the Catawissa,PA or Ohio Yoder families. Mary Yoder was born June 02, 1803 of Catawissa,PA? and died March 1896 in Wayne County, OH. She married JAMES C. PANCOAST about 1825 in Catawissa,PA (possibly). I am descended from their first born son, CASPER C. PANCOAST born December 10, 1826 and died Dec. 12, 1884 in Wyandot County,OH. Their other children are: Mary born 1828, Sarah born 1830, Elizabeth born 1832, Amanda born 1834, Rebecca, William, Edward, George, and Thomas.
  ---Sherry Young

I am fortunate to have a picture of Mary YODER Pancoast I was sent from
someone who found it in Kansas antique shop...posted on the internet. He
copied the names of their children and dates of birth of all ten which was
written on the back, with the Name of Mary Yoder Pancoast. The photograph
was taken in 1867 and she is 64yrs old and widowed (she lived to be 93!)
James Pancoast died at the age of 50 yrs in 1849 and is buried in Wyandot
County,OH. In the Bennett Book she is buried in Republic, OH where her son,
  William lived. ---Sherry Young Sherryold@hotmail.com

Chris, I am of the opinion that Sarah Yoder married Henry Dengler. As we
discussed before, it is probable that the Col. William Yoder correspondence
that said Sarah married Pancoast and went to Ohio is incorrect of wrong
daughter named. Do you have a copy of that which he writes that MARY YODER
married Charles Reinhart? I cannot find anything on that and wanted to
clear up as I am able. I thought I would share the above with you that would
lend more facts to this question.

By the way, Helen V. Yoder has corresponded with me and I shared paperwork
with her. She also believes that Mary Yoder married James Pancoast based on
the paperwork I've found. I just wish I could find her marriage record in
the Berks area!-- Sherry Young -- Winchester, VA Sept. 04

  History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
  By Luther Reily Kelker, 1907

YODER FAMILY. C. William E. Yoder, who resides at No. 826 Cowden street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and has been for some years in the employ of the Harrisburg Steam, Heat & Power Company, is a descendant of a well known family of the state of Pennsylvania, and traces his paternal ancestry, from whom he has inherited many excellent and sterling qualities, to Holland.

Daniel Yoder, grandfather of C. William E. Yoder, was born in Holland and emigrated to the United States many years ago. He settled in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, and for a number of years was a resident of Pottsville. He was a tanner by trade, and a man of considerable importance and influence in his day. He was a member of the Evangelical church, in whose affairs he took an active and beneficial interest. He died at the age of eighty-five years. Married Mary La Ross, who died at the age of eighty-nine years and is buried by the side of her husband in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania. Their children, all deceased, were: James L., of whom see forward ; Joseph, William, Charles, Eliza, Mary, Caroline and Daniel.

James L. Yoder, son of Daniel and Mary (La Ross) Yoder, was born in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, September 4, 1832, died March 24, 1901, and is buried in the Wiconisco cemetery, in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania. He received a good education in the public schools of Pottsville and Orwigsburg, being instructed in both the German and English languages. At the age of sixteen years he was apprenticed to learn the trade of watch making with his brother, Joseph, in Pottsville, and worked for him until the death of the latter, when he obtained a position in the drug store of John G. Brown, with whom he remained for four years. He came to Dauphin county in 1881, settled at Wiconisco, and opened a jewelry store, in which venture he was very successful. He carried on this business a number of years, and acquired a considerable amount of real estate and amassed a competence. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a class leader in that institution. He was associated as member with the following organizations: Free and Accepted Masons of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania; Junior and Senior Orders of American Mechanics; Patriotic Sons of America; and the Knights of Pythias. He was an ardent supporter of the Republican party, and was at one time auditor of the township.

He was a man of influence in his time, served as sheriff of Schuylkill county, as burgess of Pottsville, and was ajnember of the school board. He was a stanch Democrat in politics, a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and died about the year 1875, at the age of sixty-eight years. He married (first) Hannah Myers, who died at the age of thirty-three years, having borne him six children, all of whom are deceased except Mrs. Yoder. He married (second) Ruth Barber, who is now (1907) living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of ninety-nine years, and by whom he had three children: James, Robert and Emma. The children of James L. and Matilda (Leib) Yoder were: i. Mary C., married R. W. C. William E. Yoder, third child and eldest son of James L. and Matilda (Leib) Yoder, was born in Pottsville, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, February 18, 1858. He was about three months old when his parents removed to Wiconisco, Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, and his education was a meagre one, as he entered the schools for but a short time. At the early age of ten years he commenced the serious business of life, his first work consisting of picking slate at the mines, at the old Lykens' Valley breaker. He next obtained employment in the mines as door attendant and driver, and was then made stable boss on the Lykens' Valley slope. This position he held for nine years. His next work was as brakeman on the P. & R. railway, and he was subsequently advanced to the position of conductor, working in this capacity for a period of three and one-half years, and then returning to Wiconisco. There he engaged in the grocery business, which he sold at the end of another three and one-half years, and went to Harrisburg, July 25, 1889. He accepted an offer made him by the Harrisburg Steam, Heat and Power Company, to work for them as steamfitter, and a year later was advanced to the position of meter man, a position he has retained up to the present time, having charge of and keeping in repair all the meters of the company, a position of great responsibility. He was formerly a member of the Grace Methodist Episcopal church on State street, Harrisburg, and was one of the organizers of the Epworth Methodist Episcopal church at Twenty-first and Derry streets, was steward of the latter institution, was the first superintendent of the Sunday school, serving in that capacity four years, was the first secretary of the Epworth League Society, and was director of the choir of the Thirteenth Street Methodist Episcopal church for nine years. County Pa, but "Venango" handscribed could well be interpreted and typed as
  "Orange" -strong assumption that "missing link" George of Venango Co is he;

Well, you know by now that it is, indeed, George of Venango County, and Venango and Orange could be mixed up. However,
here's a tidbit I found that might offer another explanation, referencing Columbia County PA, where George lived before he moved to Venango County PA:

  From: Denver Public Library
“History of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, from the Earliest Times”

Page 56 “Orange was for a long time a seperate election district, but not a township. But at the April Court, 1839, after some oppostition, parts of Bloom, Mount Pleasant and Fishing Creek were carved out and the name Orange given to the territory.”

So there was a district in Columbia County called "Orange". It's late for our George, butI thought it was intriguing and worth sharing.

The first furniture store in Garner was
established in 1871 by Kemp & Christie.
In 1880 William Yoter purchased the

of that line, enjoying a monopoly. A de-

ture receives the attention of Mr. Yoter,
who is a good practical workman, and
whatever he takes hold of is well done.

William Yoter, a native of Cumberland

May, 1819. When nineteen years old he
went to Pittsburg, where he was appren-
ticed to the trade of cabinetmaker. Here
he cast his first vote for William Henry
Harrison. Soon after finishing his trade
he established himself in New Castle,
where he followed the same for sixteen
years. In 185V lie was joined in wedlock

  * Source: My father in law George Lewis. I do not have a transcript or
originals of this census. Judging by when Alice was born they were in IL
since 1859 at least. There is information on Douglas County website regarding
Eliza Yoter purchasing land from the RR in 1860's.
There is also a marriage shown for Adaline Yoter and William Stone in 1867.
The 1860 IL Census for Douglas County, page 890, had a William Stone, age 22
or 23, from KY who was single and a Farm Hand. Not sure if the same person,
but he is not on 1870 census.

The 1870 for the same family has:
Yoter William 51 Furniture D&W Penn
  Eliza 53 Keeping House Ireland
  Adaline 20 Penn
  Clara 9 Ill
Both girls have their mother listed as foreign born, and notice Indiana in
1860 and Ireland in 1870 as Eliza's birth place. They are living with John
Linegar (grocer) and his wife Sarah who are 64 & 65 respectively, he from PA
she from NJ. I wonder if there were Linegar's in Venango Co or Lawrence Co
in 1850? Note: For some reason the 1870 Douglas Co census transcript does
not show William Yoter, it has him & family down as Linegar, but the
name Yoter is there on the original census.
12/15/1870 - Record of marriage of Adeline Lewis and Allen F. Lewis. (Allen
is listed as A.T. on the census - they got the middle initial wrong).
There is no record of Yoter's in Arcola on the 1880 census as far as I can
tell. Next time we're in Tuscola, I'll check the courthouse to see if there
are any records for Jane or Clara or any more info on William or Eliza. My
husband's great uncle (several times) Allen F. was living with his parents in
Hearne, TX in 1880. No Adaline and he says he is 30 and single!
Unfortunately, we have "lost contact" with 6 of the 8 Lewis' kids and the
only records that we have prior to 1900's are from government sources, so
there are more questions than there are answers.

My husband, Chuck Ferguson, is a descendant of George Yoter (OY426), and we've corresponded before. I have some information to share with the Yoder Archives.
Here is a transcript of the obituary for George's son, William (OY4261):
  From: THE WEEKLY WYMOREAN
Wymore, Nebraska, Saturday, April 4, 1903
  OBITUARY
William Yoter, aged eighty-six years, departed this life Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. E. Wellemeyer, in this city. Death was caused by heart failure and the infirmities incidental to old age. He died peacefully with perfect faith in his Creator and hope of immortal life. As he realized that the end was near, he found comfort and consolation in the singing of his favorite hymn, “Lead Kindly Light.” He was not afraid to go, for he knew that the One who had watched over him in life, would not forsake him in death. For ten years he has made his home with his daughter, who has given him every attention possible. At the last, loving hands were striving to make his burden light as they had done throughout his life. Mr. Yoter was a native of Pennsylvania. After his marriage to Miss Eliza Dalzell, in 1854, he removed to Illinois, wlhere the family lived for twenty years. Garner, Iowa, was their home for several years after that and in 1892 they moved to St. Francis, Kansas. Here Mrs. Yoter passed into the great beyond, April 12, 1893. Mr. Yoter was a devout member of the Congregational church and his life was that of a good, sincere Christian. Both in spirit and action he was true to his fellowman. He was the senior member of the Wellemeyer & Yoter Hardware company, and was unusually active for a man of his years. His earthly work is finished and all who knew him will say his life was well lived. Avery simple but impressive funeral service was held at the family home Friday morning, by Rev. W. F. Berger, and then all that was mortal of William Yoter was consigned to mother earth in *Overlook cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn. May he rest in peace.
*Overlook Cemetery is Wymore Cemetery, Gage Co, NE. (Wymore Cemetery is located on section 24 of Sicily Township. The cemetery is located 1 mile west of Wymore--from Gage Co, NE site at GenWeb.)
I'll send some more information in another email.

From- Jill Ferguson, Denver, CO- Feb 2010

Lastly, I can't prove it, but I think Chuck's family has a wooden chest built by William Yoter, who was a furniture maker.  My mother-in-law, Lucille,  complained for years (which is why I remember the story so well!) that while she was taking care of her dying grandmother (Elizabeth Benninghoff Dunkerly--daughter of Sarah Yoter whose parents were George OY426 Yoter and Margaret Shickel of Venango Co PA) her sisters never helped, but kept coming by and asking their Grandmother for family heirlooms.  They got all the good stuff and my mother-in-law got nothing, after doing all the work.   Her sister Florence (Chuck's aunt) got a wooden chest that Lucille wanted.

As the story goes, the chest was a wedding gift to Elizabeth from her brother.  When the family moved to Illinois, the chest went with them.  After several years in Illinois, the family returned to PA, bringing the chest back.  Elizabeth's husband complained that they had to haul that chest all the way to Illinois and back again.  Nice story....BUT....it dawned on me years later that Elizabeth went to IL as a child, with her parents.  She married after the return to PA and spent the rest of her life in PA.  So it couldn't have been her chest.  Most likely, it was her mother's.  And her mother, Sarah Yoter Benninghoff, had a brother named William Yoter who was a furniture maker...............!    Lucille is still living at 93 but suffering from dementia.  Aunt Florence is doing pretty well, but she has kids and grandkids, so I expect the chest to end up with one of them.  We do have a photo of it, somewhere in a shoebox.  We wanted to be sure and document the chest.  Chuck happens to be Aunt Florence's favorite nephew, so she took all her knick-knacks off of it and let us take the picture.

Chuck and I really appreciate the Yoder archives.  As you know, getting researchers together in one place to share information is really conducive to putting it all together.  Yolanda Lewis' census info, placing William Yoter of Lawrence Co in Arcola IL was a big "Aha!" moment for us, because Chuck's great-great grandparents (Sarah Yoter and Charles Benninghoff) moved there too, which made us all the more certain that William was Sarah's brother.

"We researched George Yoter early in our genealogy career (as in, didn't
always know what we were doing) and did not copy his will--only took
notes on names. However, we have an agreement between Elias and
Nicholas Hartman, relieving Hartman from his duties as executor of
  George's will. (Venango County, Grantor/Grantee V 95 p 317,
March 28, 1873). "...the said Elias Yoter was made the residuary
legatee or devisee of the remainder of the estate of said George Yoter,
deceased". The next part lists items set aside for Margaret (feather
beds, crockery, etc.) and then "...the rest of the property was turned
  over to said Elias Yoter."

"However, last night at the library, I did find an item in the 1879
Venango County History stating that Elias moved to Sugarcreek Twp. in
1876. Since the farm picture comes from the same 1879 source, and
George was of Oakland Twp. at the time of his death, 1872, it wouldn't
be George's farm. Sorry for the confusion. We weren't sure about it ,
just thought it might be George's.

"One other note: Denver Public Library has a History of N. Pennsylvania
that has biographical info on the Benninghoffs in Venango Co and lists
Charles Benninghoff's wife as "Sarah Yates". Chuck's grandfather, the
late Clarence Dunkerley (Charles and Sarah's grandson) told us her name
was Yoder, not Yates. Otherwise, we would never have known the correct
name. We don't have any photos, documentation or oral history; sorry we
don't have more information to share; we certainly appreciate all the
new information. If we find more in the future, we will pass it on to

were named George and Margaret.)-Jill Ferguson

  Jan. 2005.
Hi Chris,-I sent you some pictures last week from the Pleasantville
Cemetery. I spent the day today at the Berks County Court House doing
some research. I have a copy of Solomon Yoder's Will. In the Yost Yoder
Lineage information , there was a question as to who his second wife
Was, and the date of his death is wrong. He died January 19,
1891 according to his death record and will. His second or perhaps
third and final wife was Rebecca... I'll need to do more research to
verify how many times he was married. Another note: I believe he is
buried in the Good Shepperd Cemetery at Rt.61 and Tuckerton Rd in
Muhlenberg Township. I will also verify that when some of this snow
melts, right now the cemetery is buried, but one of my cousin's told me
that he and Rebecca are buried there rather than Gernant's Cemetery.

Here is his will as written in the Berks County Register of Will
  Records:

In the name of God , Amen. I, Solomon Yoder. of the township of
Muhlenberg, in the county of Berks and state of Pennsylvania, do make
and publish my last will and testament, in manner following to wit:

First - I give and bequeath onto my beloved wife REBECCA the interest
of one third of the valuation of our farm on which I now reside, that
is now to say after the said farm shall be sold one third of the amount
realized from said sale shall be and remain a charge on said farm, the
interest of which shall be paid to my heirs and legal representations.

Item - I give and bequeath onto my son Daniel, $200.00 and my gold
  watch.

Item - I give and bequeath onto my son Solomon, the sum of $200.00 .

Item - I give and bequeath onto my son William the sum of $200.00.

Item - It is my will and desire, that my hereinafter named executor
shall pay to my daughter Hannah, the sum of not less than $1800.00, nor
more than $2000.00 for the following purpose to wit: my said daughter
Hannah shall purchase with said amount of money a suitable house for
herself and my beloved Rebecca to live in for and during their lifetime
and after to death of the survivor of their said house to be sold at
public sale, by my hereinafter named executor at public sale, and I do
hereby empower said executor to give good and sufficient deed or deeds
for the sale of my real estate and the proceeds of the sale or sales
aforesaid shall be divided to and among my heirs and legal
representatives share and share alike, after first deducting the
foregoing bequests, but the share or portion coming to my daughter
Mary, wife of Samuel Heist, shall be invested by my hereinafter named
executor in the manner following, to wit:
he shall either purchase a house which she shall occupy during her
lifetime and after her death the same shall go to her children, their
heirs and assigns forever, or if my hereinafter named executor cannot
conveniently and profitably to the interest of my said daughter Mary ,
purchase such real estate, then he shall invest her share on a bond
secured by a mortgage, the interest of which to be paid annually to my
said daughter Mary, during her lifetime and after her death , the
principal to be paid to her children, their heirs and legal
  representatives, share and share alike.

Item - It is my will and I direct that should any of my children be
dissatisfied with the provision of this my last will and testament and
thereby occasion an expense to my estate there and in that care lie,
she or they shall be disinherited entirely.
Lastly, I do nominate and appoint my friend David Houltry, executor of
my last will and testament I have here onto set my hand a seal, this
  2nd day of December 1890. 							SOLOMON YODER {SEAL}

Signed , sealed published and declared this to be my last will and
testament in the presence of us, In line 26 "the word" "John" has been
erased and the word "William" inserted before the execution of this
  will.

  Hello Chris,

I have written occasionally in the past regarding family information, and I was wondering if I could add a bit about my grandfather Leroy I. Yoder (na. Tuesday, November 14, 1922).  His father, John E. Yoder (OY434163) married Bertha Staver, who did indeed die from scarlet fever per my grandfather.  I see this is already included in the Yost Yoder lineage on the website.  Leroy was sent away from the family around age 9 to work on a dairy farm.  He served in WWII and the Korean conflict.  He told me stories about his military service.  He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea during WWII.  He was a supply sergeant in Korea.  He lived in Reading where he and my grandmother Elizabeth (Betty) Yundt (later Feick) raised my father, William David, and four other children: Harold, Kathy, David (died from leukemia around age 4?), and Carol (adopted).  My grandmother died in March 1984 from complications due to diabetes and physician malpractice, which led to litigation.  My grandfather died last year, Saturday, January 13, 2007.  His burial site is at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

I am William David Yoder's oldest child, and my younger brother is Zachary Yoder.

  Best regards,--- Erika (Yoder) Christian

  OY44- Abraham Yoder b. c1770 d.> 1803 m. Sep.26,1802 by Rev. Boos
to Elizabeth Breyvogel of Rockland Twp at Schwartzenwald Ref. Ch.
(Per Reading Adler of December 5 , 1843: "Abraham Joder--age 73/5/5 --Rockland township."-- Courthouse records show "1843- Inventory filed Dec. 18, 1843 Abraham Yoder of Rockland Letter of Adm to David Drey, son in law". OY44's date of birth is not known, nor is his date of death. But it is known that he was living as of 1803 when his father's will was made. From the obituary we see that the deceased was born in 1770. Census records are not clear on where this Abraham lived.
  ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Montgomery's Biographical History of Berks County provides information on the descent of the Abarham whose son-in-law was david Dry as follows (under Nathan Dry on page 1716): "David Dry, son of John, was born in Rockland township, in July, 1805, and died at Stony Point in November, 1872. He was a life long farmer, owning a fertile tract of 176 acres. About twelve years before his death, he retired and settled in Stony Point. He was a Democrat, and served as school director. With his family he attended Mertz's Church. He married Susan Yoder, daughter of Abraham Yoder and his wife, whose maiden name was Price. Mrs. Yoder died when Susan was but one day old. Mrs. Susan (Yoder) Dry died in August, 1888, aged nearly eighty-two years. She was the mother of ten children: Nathan; Elizabeth m. Peter Wanner; Rachel m. Samuel Herbein; Mary m. Capt. Jonas Schollenberger; Catharine m. David Levengood; John; Abraham lives in Reading; Caroline is unmarried; Esther m. John Herbein; and Amanda m. James M. High."
What of the name "Price" for Abraham's wife? Research by Richard Yoder provides an explanation. In a folder at the Historical Society for the price family, he found that: Conrad Price married Ester Hoch , they had a daughter Maria Price who married Jacob Breyfogel , they had a daughter Elizabeth Brefogel who married Abraham Yoder, Sept 26, 1802 by Rev Wm Boos at the Schwartzwald Church in Exeter Township in Berks Co. It is apparent that "Price" was the name of Abraham's mother-in-law, not of his wife.
