This may be the Jacob Yoder appearing on the passenger list dated 21 September 1742, imported in the ship "Francis and Elizabeth," George North, master, from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, per A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and other Immigrants in Pennsylvania, From 1727 to 1776, by Prof. I. Daniel Rupp, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1985. Appears in 1790 Census of Montgomery County, PA, page 167. Jakob remained a bachelor and died 1816 in Union County (of which Snyder was a part, 1813-1855), PA. Will probated 1816; Jacob Yoder (bachelor), Center Township, Snyder County; Heirs: nephews Jacob Yoder, Melchior Yoder, John Yoder, all children of Johann Melchior (See M- Melchoir Yoder below.) EJ134- Johann Melchior born 15 August 1736. Melchior is the immigrant ancestor of the "M" line. (See M- Melchoir Yoder line below.)

EJ135- Henry born circa 1739. Henry died 1816 in Snyder County, PA. (Per Dorothy Coffman, Henry left his estate to his nephews - apparently left no children as well.)

General Comments, Melchior Yoder Line

Notes from a typed manuscript by Col. George M. Yoder of Hickory, North Carolina prepared in about 1901 and entitled "Of the Yoder Family in the United States". See YNL, April 1997, pages 1, 6.

"I have a history of Freesburg Charge in my possession. That Charge is composed of six churches and all are Union churches which were built over a hundred years ago. The constitution for the government of the different congregations is a joint one. In this history I find some Yoders had taken a very conspicuous part. I find that Melchor Yotter (Yoder) (M) had two brothers named Jacob and Daniel, and a sister named Eve, who left Switzerland and landed at Philadelphia and settled in {Philadelphia now} Montgomery County. One of them settled at a place called Drop, where he erected a factory of some kind, which he afterwards sold and went to Northumberland County. "About 1765 (sic - bought in 1796) Melchor Yoder (Senior) (M), in Snyder County bought a large tract of land on a creek that extended several miles. About 1799 Melchor and John Yoder, Peter Godshalk and Samuel Moyer were elected Trustees to solicit subscriptions to rebuild St.Peter's or Seibers church and a schoolhouse, which was the custom in those days in Pennsylvania. On this list I find John Yoder {M1}, Peter Yoder {M6}, Jacob {M2} and Henry Yoder {M4} and Melchior Yoder, Jr. {M5}.
"Melchor Yoder (Senior), came to Northumberland County with his wife, Anna, in 1749 (sic) and bought 103 acres of land from Judah Roberts. His children were Melchior {M5}, John Peter {M6} and Abraham {?}. John {M1} married Catherine Hart. Their children were Nancy, who married a Mr. Woodling; Elizabeth, who married George Shack, and Samuel, who married Sarah Helbish. John Yoder died Oct. 20th, 1832. Peter lives in the old homestead. Melchor Yoder (Senior) was the father of Melchor, Jr. George Shack, who married Elizabeth, came in possession of the upper part of the farm.
"The sister, Eve, who came with them, married a man named Longacre and remained in Montgomery County. So did Jacob and Daniel. Some of their descendants live in Lancaster County."

(YNL NOTE- Melchior and Jacob WERE brothers, regarding Eve (?Yoder) Longacre - see parents of M21's wife below - same Eve?.. a second cousin marriage seems unlikely ...... it's known that Melchior and Jacob had a cousin named Daniel ... see below.)

Commentary by Mrs. Dorothy Yoder Coffman, 7 December 1996.

"All we have on that Daniel with a sister Eve who left Switzerland is from the notes of the Schultz Journals. We found these at the Shwenkfelder Library at Pennsburg, Pennsylvania a number of years ago. They date from 1726-1760. There seems to be a relationship between the Montgomery County, PA Yoders and the Conrad Yoder who went to North Carolina, but we can't prove what it is. This Daniel was not married and left his land and goods in Berks County, PA to various people in 1783/84. He MAY have been brother to Jacob and Melchior and Henry and sister Mary. So far we have not found any immigration records for this family.
"Haven't found any village by the name of "Drop". Melchior {M} paid taxes on 130 acres of land in (then) Philadelphia County, Hatfield Township, in 1774. He paid taxes there until 1782 when he moved to Limerick Township and was taxed there thru 1796. His son John {M1} was taxed there 1792-96. Melchior, Sr. also appears there in the 1790 census. The extra female with his family at that time could be (her) mother, a sister or a wife of one of the sons. Don't know.
"Melchior, Sr. bought land in Northumberland/Union/Snyder County, Penn Township, in 1796 (not 1765 or 1649). He was taxed for 350 acres in 1799, and John was taxed for 100 acres at that time.
"Some of G. M. Yoder's information is O.K., but nothing like a document to firm things up.
"I can't say that a sister of Melchior, Sr. did or did not come with them, but I doubt the statement that a Eve Yoder married Daniel LONGACKER and went to Greene County with him. I believe Daniel Longacker's wife Eve was born a MOREDOCK but I still can't prove this with a document. This clue comes from a land settlement in Greene County of her father. This Eve was born circa 1762-70 which makes her a generation younger than Melchior and his brothers.
"According to court records (land and wills) Melchior's brothers Henry and Jacob both remained unmarried and moved to Northumberland/Union/Snyder County when Melchior did. Henry and Jacob both left their estates to their nephews (Fisher, page 102).
"When in Montgomery County, these people were Mennonites and attended the same group as did the Longakers and the Godshalks. After the move to Northumberland/Union/Snyder County, they worked on the Lutheran church building and at least two (2) of the sons married Lutherans.
"Tax records list son John {M1} as a weaver, son Jacob {M2} as a potter and son Henry {M4} as a cooper. They also farmed.
"Where G. M. Yoder lists the children of Jacob and Elizabeth (M2), from the census and tax records we find there were ten (10) children. He missed one son - Christopher. The order is not exactly correct either. Parenthesis indicate dates computed from census and tax records: William, b (1793), John L. b (1796-7), George D. b (1798-9), Christopher b (1800), Elizabeth b 17 August 1803, Jacob, Jr. b 17 August 1805, Daniel b (1808), Joseph b (1813), Mahlon b 20 December 1814, and James Lindsay b (1819)."

NOTE by YNL- We are certain that "Christopher" was NOT a son of Jacob Yoders, M2. His "existence" was based on faulty cemetery records. Not only does the information given to George M. Yoder omit him, but so does that of Mary A. Miller Smith, M2332 (see YNL26).

DESCENDANTS OF MELCHIOR YODER, IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR
-PART ONE-

M- (Johann) Melchior Yoder born 15 August 1736 in Weidenthal, Phaltz, Germany. Carpenter. m. circa 1764 in Philadelphia County, PA to Anna Godshalk (born circa 1739 in Towamencin Township, Philadelphia (became Montgomery, 1784) County, PA; 12th d/o Godshalk Godshalk and his wife, Eve Custer - died 1786). Naturalized 17 October 1765 at Perquioming, Hatfield Township, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County, PA. Paid taxes on 130 acres of land in Hatfield Township, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County in 1774-1782 when he moved to Limerick Township where he was taxed through 1796/7; bought land he patented in Center and Middle Creek Townships, Northumberland (became Union in 1813; became Snyder in 1855) County, PA, 1796; taxed for that land in 1799 (350 acres) through 1813 (130 acres). Resident of Montgomery County, PA per 1790 Census, page 159. He patented "Willow Bottom", 300 (325.5) acres on Ruff Creek, Washington (now Washington Township, Greene) County, PA in December 1786, but he probably never went there as the patent was returned in July 1791. Melchoir appears to be a Trustee of the Middle Creek Society of Brethren along with Peter Godshalk, John Yoder and Samuel Meyer, which had been organized for the purpose of building a church and school, including the Rush Burying Ground. Melchior died circa 1822 in Union (now Snyder) County, PA. He may have been interred in the above mentioned burial ground, now Globe Mills Cemetery, Middle Creek Township, Snyder County, PA, in which several of his descendants are interred. Will probated May 1822; named a son Henry (M4). [Sources: 1) Naturalizations of Foreign Protestants in the American and West Indian Colonies, M. S. Some sources claim that the above Godshalk line contains middle names at this point in time. There is no evidence to support this claim.

Research documented in the October 1994 Yoder Newsletter (Issue Number 24) presents evidence supporting the likelihood that Jacob Yoders (M2 - founder of the Greene and Washington County Yoders families) was the son of Melchior Yoder of Northumberland County, PA. Jacob of that family was a potter and disappeared from tax records in the East just before Jacob (a potter) appears in Western PA. Other clues likewise support this link.

The "Yoders" family from Greene and Washington Counties, PA is based on early 20th century Yoder data located and compiled by the late Carl Miller Yoders (M234341). John Wesley Yoders (M23451), Will Yoders, and Mrs. Mary A. Miller Smith (M2332) had initially gathered some of that data. The 1927 letter by Mary Miller Smith cited a grandson of Jacob by daughter Elizabeth (Yoders) Sharp, M24, who was still living at the age of 80 in Washington, PA. This gives credence to the notes that were written at that time as it refers to people who were the aunts and uncles of folks who were still living at that time.

The YNL conclusions are CONFIRMED by the notes of Col. George M. Yoder of Hickory, NC in 1901 - obviously gained from direct contact with the family by correspondence around the turn of the century. He writes: "Jacob had taken a great interest in getting up subscriptions to rebuild St. Peter's or Seiber's Church, near Globe Mills, Middle Creek Township {now Snyder County, PA}. He subscribed and paid $12 for material for the church. In a few years he left there with his family, and moved to Greene County, PA, in the southwestern portion of the State. He had nine children: John, William, George, Elizabeth, Daniel, Joseph, Mahlon, Lindsay and Jacob. The descendants of these sons are scattered over Greene and Washington counties and Marshall County, WV. John, the oldest son, went to Ohio; William also went there. One of his sons married Elizabeth Marsteller. The descendants in Greene and Washington Counties, of Jacob Yoder, numbered about 40; and these have married and increased in number considerably."

Residence: Limerick Township, Montgomery County, PA, 1768 to ?; Northumberland County 1800, Centre Township, Northumberland County 1810, Centre Township, Union County, 1820-1833. [Union County formed from Northumberland County 1813, Snyder County from Union County 1855.] Weaver and farmer. m. 14 November 1790 in Northumberland (Snyder since 1855) County, PA to A. Catherine Hart/Hert (born 17 April 1769, d/o John Hert ­ died 1843). Taxed in Limerick Township, Montgomery County - 1793, 1795 & 1796; Penn Township, Northumberland County - 1799, 1802 farmer, 1803, 1804, 1806 - 100 acres, 1809 - 100 acres, 1810 - 103 acres, 1811 Middle Creek - 103 acres, 1813. [One male >45 lived with him in 1810 - could be Jacob Yoders, M2.] John died 20 October 1833, aged 64 years, 10 months and 23 days, in Snyder (formerly Union) County, PA; both interred at Rush Cemetery, Globe Mills, Middle Creek Township, Snyder County, PA. English translation of German tombstone inscription: "On the 14th of November 1790 came to this area with Catherine Hert, together with a son and daughter, who remain." Thus, the traditional marriage date ascribed to this couple is suspect.

M11- Elizabeth born 20 January 1795. m. George SCHOCH (born 1796 - died 1877). Elizabeth died 12 January 1870.

M13 Samuel Yoder born 8 July 1807 in Northumberland County, PA. Farmer. Residence: Middlebury, Union County, PA, 1850; Middle Creek, Snyder County, PA, 1880. m. Sarah Hilbish (born 28 April 1808 - died 14 January 1887, aged 78 years, 8 months and 16 days). The household in 1850 included Mary Dunkelberger, born circa 1834; in 1880 it included Ann Bishop, widow, born circa 1825. Samuel died 23 October 1883, age 76y 3m 15d; both interred at Rush Cemetery, Globe Mills, Middle Creek Township, Snyder County, PA.

M131- Emanuel born 11 April 1830. Farm laborer. Remained single (Per G. M. Yoder in 1901: "Emanuel is an old bachelor.") Residence: Middle Creek, Snyder County, PA, 1880 with parents; New Berlin, Union County, PA, with brother Peter, 1900. Emanuel died 24 December 1906; interred at New Berlin Cemetery.

Residence: Middle Creek, Middle Township, Snyder County, PA, 1880; New Berlin, Union County, PA, 1900. m. circa 1866 to Margaretha H. Oldt (born March 1847 in PA, d/o Daniel Oldt and his wife, Sarah Benfer - died 1905). Per G.M. Yoder of Hickory, NC in 1901: "Peter, a brother to Samuel, lives on the old homestead, and is a dealer in agricultural implements. His son, A. A. Yoder, is an eminent physician, living at Selm's Grove (sic - Selinsgrove, now Snyder County), PA." John died 1919; both interred in New Berlin Cemetery, New Berlin, Union County, PA.

M1322- Allen Alfred O. born August 1870. An eminent physician and stomach specialist. Residence: Selinsgrove, Snyder County, PA; boarder with Flora Boyer, 1900; moved to Akron, Ohio. m. Susie Kirkpatrick; no issue.

Residence: Middleburg, Middle Creek Township, Snyder County, PA, 1880. 1900 Census of Middleburg Township, Snyder County, PA: YODER, Barbara 58 8-41; Annie, dtr. 32 7-67; Banks, son 31 9-68; Dora, dtr. 22 (Bolig?); HOLLENSKIN, Ellen, 9 7-90 granddaughter. (Per G.M. Yoder in 1901: born 17 April 1836 - died 28 May 1898 of typhoid fever). m. Barbara A. Walter (born 11 August 1841 - died 21 June 1900 at age 58y 10m 10d). (Per G.M. Yoder: "{Samuel married} Barbara Walter - a daughter of Christian Walter, and went into the mercantile business for about 20 years. He afterwards sold out and bought David Meiser's mill property at Globe Mills, Meiser Station {Snyder County, PA}, on the railroad. In a few years he built a three-story brick house, and put a roller mill structure in it, the capacity of which was 100 barrels a day. He was elected associate judge of Snyder County, and was a vice-president of the First National Bank at Middleburg, at the time of his death. He had three sons - Grant, Banks, and John, the last a Lutheran minister. He had four daughters."). He was a sergeant in the Civil War. Samuel died 27 May 1895, aged 57 years, 1 month, and 23 days at Globe Mills, Middle Creek Township, Snyder County, PA; interred at Globe Mills (Rush) Cemetery.

M2- Jacob Yoder(s) born circa 1770 in Philadelphia (Montgomery since 1784) County, PA. Potter and farmer. Jacob is believed to be the first of the Yoders to settle in Greene County, PA, and he is the progenitor of all bearing the surname YODERS. Residence: Philadelphia County, PA, circa 1770-?; Snyder/Union/Northumberland County, PA, 1800; Penn Township, Northumberland County, PA, 1806; Jefferson Township, Greene County, PA, 1807-1810; East Bethlehem Township, Washington County, PA, 1820; Morgan Township, Greene County, PA, 1830-1840. m. circa 1793 to Elizabeth ___________ (born 1771- "Relict of Jacob Yoders died Febr 6th 1845 In the 74th year of her age" [tombstone inscription] at Amity, Amwell Township, Washington County, PA). Jacob died 10 January 1843 in Washington County; both interred at Amity Presbyterian Church Cemetery (Lower Ten Mile Church Cemetery), Amity, Amwell Township, Washington County, PA.

Moredock - died after 1860 but before 15 November 1867 in Carroll County, Ohio). William died after 1870 in Fox Township, Carroll County, Ohio.
Census records indicate that this family had one daughter less than age 10 in the 1810 Census. In the 1820 Census, it is indicated that there are 4 children in this family.
