Subject: Stutzman/Yoder Query
Thanks so much for creating this site! I have just started
to research
the Emery and Yoder family trees and discovered my Grandfather,
Rev.
Edwin Stanton Yoder on your website (YB13994), a Congregational
minister
who was a son of Aaron (YB1399)and Fianna Crauthamel Yoder.
I was surprised to see the Yoder name traced back to Switzerland
since my
father, Wallace R. Yoder, always told me that the four Yoder brothers
immigrated from Holland when the Dutch settled New Amsterdam!
Does
anyone know if there is any truth to this claim?

Dear Anna Belle,
I just checked through the more inclusive genealogies that

his children by wife Catherine Miller do not include a Milo.
Perhaps some of the members of the Yoder listserver may be

Dear Kimberly,
I recieved your letter. It is interesting that you go to Grand
Valley. My
husband Steve graduated from Grand Valley December 1981. I just
became
familiar with the Yoder website a few months ago. I have obtained
a good deal
of information from it. I am descended from Melchoir Yoder. I've
been using
family tree maker for about 6 months.
I've found it to be a good program. However, I'm not willing to
buy into the
xtra purchase of additional discs that may or may not be of use.
I've
submitted my info to the Yoder website. I'm not sure if its been
posted yet.
I assume that is where you got my e-mail address. If I can be
of help just
let me know. I'm more than happy to share what ever info is useful
to you.
I'm unsure how to send you the files you want by e-mail. I would
probably
find it easier just to print them up and snail mail them to you.
Just let me

FTM can create a "Family Finder Report", which searches
the family
finder index for several, or all your relatives at once. Then
a report
is generated which shows potential matches on the CD's Broderbund
sells.
This feature can be found under the "View" menu. Broderbund
has a 90 day
guarantee on all their products. If you don't like it or want
it,
they'll refund your money! I think some of the CD's are on the
expensive
side but if the info you need is there, it's probably worth it.

I read this book a couple of years ago - assumed that it was
fiction -
assumed that Michener did what a lot of writers and movie producers
like
to do these days, set their stories against an Amish background
-- liked
the book because of the look into how novels get published and
some of
the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on, as well as one view
of early
days in PA -- like all James Michener books -- would give my eye
teeth to
be able to write my family history book in Michener style, incredible
detail in a very engaging novel format.
Like you I ask, was Lukas Yoder fictional?

Just a general comment....This sems to me to be clearly an
amalgam by the author of
partial historical facts and timeframes...He picked Yost Yoder
perhaps because of his
familiarity with the surname as a prime represenative of Palatinate
settlemnt...here is
my reasoning...I've never seen Lukas/Lucas as a first name in
the Yoder clan, 1677 is a
bit early/late for some of the prime religious persecutions in
Switzerland (the
Anabaptist moves from Steffisburg appear about 1692 onward) and
earlier than the know
Joder movement into the Palatinate, the 1797 date of Pa. settlement
was wrong by almost
90 years on the first Yoder arrival in Berks, the name Uriah Zollicoffer
seems totally
unfamiliar (either first or second name)...so I've assume right
along that Michener's
character was an interesting occurrence but nothing worth reading
anything into.... it
just doesn't click with what's known in many ways.--Chris Yoder

This raises some questions which have been churning in the
back of my
mind, namely:
How good is the information that is found on the CD's that
the various
software makers are offering? Is it from primary sources, or just
a
compilation of a number of gedcoms submitted by various people?
If it is
from gedcoms, do these companies make any effort to check for
accuracy,
etc.? Family history, to a large software company, may be a sideline
that
someone suggested would make the company a few bucks. Who is in
charge of
quality control of the INFORMATION? I suspect a company's quarantee
only
extends to the technical quality of the product delivered, not
necessarily to the quality of the information. We all know of
the "family
history" books which are nothing more than a listing from
telephone
directories of every one of a certain surname.
Has anyone found the father and grandfather of YR1 and YR2
on these
disks? --- along with good documentation?? <grin>
Part of the reason these questions arise is that I have been
downloading
gedcoms from GenServ and Ancestry. When I check the information
from some
of these gedcoms I find references to various CD-ROM collections
such as
the one mentioned, and some of the information does not match
well with
sources such as AAMG, or the other "classics" in our
backgrounds. I am
not knocking GenServ, or similar organizations that are designed
to help
people share their collections -- just asking the question about
the
quality of the information on these CD-ROM disks.
Two interesting "sharing" web sites that you might
look at if you want to
tap in to the collections that others have done are:
http://www.ancestry.com
http://www.genserv.com
Search their databases. Both have a "free" take-a-look
feature and a
small fee if you want to really get involved.(Probably less than
the cost
of CD-ROM disks). They are fun, and I have located a couple of
good
contacts thru these places.

I have tried at least a half a dozen genealogy programs over
the years.
Family Tree Maker is by far the best I have tried and it does
the various
types of charts better to. I have more than 600 names in mine
and when I run
an ancestor chart it includes them all. It's a good program, (I
wonder if I
can get some commercial credits from the Company.
Regarding the Broderbund CD's. As Joan has pointed out, these
CD's are
nothing more than collections, that people like all of us have
submitted for
inclusion. Broderbund (formally Banner Blue) makes no claim to
their
accuracy or authenticity.
Of course the purpose is to sell them to make money. Isn't
this the purpose
of any company. This doesn't make the CD's any less helpful. My
own
collection started with information provided on the back of an
envelope from
Editor Chris. I then purchased The AAM book to complete my direct
descendants back to YR1 & YR2. I then updated this information
with all the
recent data I could find. Is all the information 100% accurate?
H_ll no, but
then what genealogy data is. I submitted my data to Broderbund
so that
others could readily import it into there tree rather than laboriously
typing it in one at a time. If enough people did this, think of
the tree we
could leave for our descendants if they were interested!

Heard an interesting (true) story about a fellow (we will call
him John)
who found a reference to his father and family in a book that
someone had
done. In this book Father was reported to have died in World War
II. Now
John and all his siblings were born AFTER WWII. Their father is
the man
who supposedly had died during the war.
John tracked down the author of the book to helpfully correct
a very
obvious error, and when he talked to her on the telephone she
(the
author) got very irrate because she was sure that what she had
in her
book was correct. "I found that information on the Internet",
she said.

about
thee.

Thanks to those who responded to my question regarding quality
of the
info on CDs. I am now convinced that these disks are at least
as good as
all the other collections that are available. And I have made
a couple of
email friends as a result of that query!

I figure all of this family data, about our dearly departed,
is public
info and should be freely shared. Note, I said "departed".
I believe that
info about LIVING people should NOT be put up on the Internet.
That is an
invasion of privacy which doesn't need to happen.
I am all for sharing of gedcoms and files to avoid the work
of keying in
all of the data which someone has already done.
Happy hunting!

Chris, I took a quick look at the index for DBH, DJH, and the
Daniel
Bender Book, and did not find a Jacob and Emma. The closest that
I found
was a Jacob and Oma (Miller) Yoder DBH 2384. Oma in index/Naomi
in Text.
Is Emma a common nickname for another first name ie.. Veronica/Franny?
Actually Emma does not seem to be too common of an Amish first
name. In
Index C of AAMG (Index of Unknown Maiden Names) Emma is only listed
eight times. Notice the long lists of other names such as Anna,
Mary or
Elizabeth. I do however think that if we search long enough we
will
probably find a Jacob and Emma.

Jno? I believe Jno is short of "Jonathan" which is

form of German
Johannes on occasions (I'm guessing it was more often in the tax

I gently

It
can be done privately by picking off the address of the party

Please send me more information about your offer to do research

charge if the requested information is found. It sounds too good
to be
true.
I'm interested in finding the parents of someone born in 1846
in Posey
County, IN. I have a few leads and lots of dead ends; one of the
leads
concerns Conrad Yoder. I do have information on this person for
the
period 1850-1913 but no death certificate.
Let me know if this is something you can undertake and whether
a credit
card is the only acceptable method of payment (would prefer to
pay by
check.)
My cousin may also interested in your services (for another
ancestor)
and I will pass the information on to her.

The few Jno's I've seen have been Johannes, aka John. The Jno
was

Don't know if there is an index, I've found most of my people
weren't
spelled properly anyway. I've been going thru my county/townships,
page
by page. I find many more of my people that way. You wouldn't
BELIEVE some
of the variations I've found! Well, maybe you would :) I already
have most
of my 1850 and 1880's looked up. It won't be much trouble to write
down any
Yoder (& variations) I find when going thru them. Tried looking
at soundex
1900 for some of my lines, but that seemed pretty confusing to
me. (I am
the one who couldn't figure out genealogy.com's listserver)
For Holmes Co, I will be for sure looking at Paint, SaltCreek,
Prarie,
Walnut Creek Twp's, maybe Hardy and Knox. City/Town of Winesburg.
If you already have 1860, guess I'll start on 1870's. If you
want me to watch
out for Yoder/etc let me know. Is there any standard format that
you want them
in?
Another thing I want to ask you about. We seem to have been
found by the
spammers finally (on the yoder list). Do we want to continue with
the
open list, and possibly more spams now that they've found us,
or require
them to belong to the list to post? Or do we want to see how much
comes thru?

Here is a draft of the text for a brass marker planned for
the Schweitzer Christian Yoder cemetery...comments welcome:
Old Yoder Cemetery
This cemetery lies on the original homestead of "Schweitzer"
Christian Yoder
(c1728-1816). He purchased a 606 acre plot in Somerset Co. on
Oct. 9,1775
for &968. Christian brought his large family from berks Co.,
and was a founder
of the "Glades" Amish congregation. He originally arrived
at Philadelphia on the
ship "Francis and Elizabeth" on sep. 21, 1742.
Son John Yoder purchased the homestead in 1796. John and his
wife Barbara
rest under two of the only marked graves in this cemetery. It
is likely that
"Schweitzer" Christian and many of his other descendants
lie under the unmarked
stones.

These have been posted to the file transfer protocol (FTP)
directory
at the Homepage and can be drawn down from that point. They will
gradually be hypertexted and placed into the normal webpages.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES:
The principal changes with the Feb. 1998 updates are:
1) Addition of a generation of Yoder Family Groups throught all
family files...This includes families married and with a first
child by the time of
the 1900 census. We want to give a special thanks to Rachel Kreider
for
reviewing all of the Amish draft family sheets and for posting
extensive
additions throughout (with update of spousal cross-references).
2) New and Detailed files from Bruce Yetter on the Descendants
of Samuel Yetter of Columbia Co., Pa. (yet-1,2,3,and indx.doc).
3) Yoder extracts from Wayne County, Oh Cemeteries (thanks to
the help of Joyce Mitchell).(wayne-oh.doc)
4) New translations of German Yoder Notes by Karl Joder and
Ottmar Jotter (schwetz.doc, oleykarl.doc, st-joder.doc) translated
thanks
to Mr. Fred Haines.

Anyone know what Yoder business this is? Just curious.

Could be! Ibersheim is located eight miles north of Worms, about
fifteen
miles northwest of Heidelberg. This post is intriguing not alone
because
of a location, but because it mentions the birth date (abt 1680)
and
father (Daniel) of Frances (Vroni) Yoder.
I found the place name and location in my Lauver book re: a
Mennonite
Stauffer family. (Being away from home presently I can,t do further
searching in me genealogy materials.) 1680 places Vroni one generation
older than the Amish Yoder immigrant brothers of 1742. I am inclined
to
the view that Ibersheim was a Mennonite community and unlikely
to have
Amish brethren but we ought not to write this off without further
research. Daniel is not a common name among early Amish families
either.
I have indicated to you in the past that I wondered if Eppstein
was the
point of emigration for our Yoders. I am unable to check the proximity
of Ibersheim and Eppstein but I think they are close (twenty to
thirty
miles). Eppstein as you know had a considerable number of Yoders
(with
suitable given names) some years prior to 1742. I was able to
persuade
Lois Ann Mast to take us via Eppstein in 1995 and we visited a
Mennonite
church there. Likewise there was a Jacob Hertzler (NOT the well
known
early Amish bishop but a Mennonite) who migrated from there. I
have come
to the conclusion then that Eppstein was most likely a Mennonite
community and not likely the home of the immigrant Yoders. (As
with
Ibersheim though, I don,t think we should take it off the table.)
If
memory serves, we were informed while in Eppstein that records
of the era
we are interested in are now located in Lachen.
Is there any way we can locate some energetic European Yoder
to try
looking into places like Ibersheim, Eppstein and Lachen? With
e-mail, we
can rapidly exchange facts with someone like that.
I had hoped the Yoder forum would generate new information
but it has
served best for those not yet fully aware of their own ancestry,
not for
breaking new ground in the unknown earlier generations. I continue
to
monitor the forum and intend to remain on it. Hope springs eternal!
I
appreciate your efforts to make it more interesting.
On another matter, what is MIME format? I see this frequently
in
e-mails. Usually I get a readable message (as with your most recent)
plus lots of gibberish in an apparent repeat of the message I
could read.
Do I need some additional program to properly receive MIME posts?
Warmest regards as always, JM

Greetings,
The Yoder Brothers, of Barberton, Ohio, are the chrysanthemum
kings of
the world. Mum moguls of the planet. Mum millionares.
A quick internet search for the phrase "Yoder Brothers"
will give all
the flowery details.
G. Ramsey Yoder's picture is here:
http://www.plantnet.com/fm-board.htm
He is a board member of the Forists's Mutual Insurcance company,
and
this is the insurance company's web site.
You can read about Yoders selling mums to the planet here:
http://kirin.topica.ne.jp/kirin1/yod_j.html
Apparently you can now buy their mums in Kenya.
(To read this page, you have to download the Holland Dutch version
of
Windows 95, since that page in in Dutch.
Lucky us, though, they also have a hotlink to the English page.
You can see a picture of one of their greenhouses here:

You can get their phone number and address here:

And on, and on, with the Internet.
Looks like green thumbs run in the Yoder family.

Hello Yoder Researchers,
Chris Yoder, owner of this list, tells me that it is ok to
send y'all
some information about some Yoder memorabilia that I have. So
here goes.
I am looking for good homes for two antique Yoder needlework
pieces.
They are:
Item #1. Katie Yoder's ABC Sampler--A vibrant cross-stitch sampler
created for Katie Yoder (b.1847 d.1878), wife of David Yoder (b.1842
d.1909). This sampler was made for Katie Yoder c. 1870 by her
sister,
Lizzie King (b.1849 d.1893).
The sampler includes Katie Yoder's name, Lizzie's initials,
and the name
of their niece, Rebecca King (b.1842 d.1909) Rebecca added her
name c.
1890. You can see a photo of this sampler, with more information,
here:
http://www.yourantiques.com/needlework.html
Item #2. Sarah Yoder's Show Towel--A homespun-cotton show towel
made
in 1852 by Sarah Yoder (b.1834 d.1897). Sarah lived in Mifflin
County,
PA. She was the daughter of Nicolas Yoder and Leah (Yoder) Yoder.
Sarah
married Joseph W. Byler (b.1828 d.1905)
Sarah Yoder sewed her name into the towel, "Sarah Yoder"
and her
daughter, Lea, later added her name. Lea married Eli B. Zook.
Sarah made
this towel to hang on a door. You can see a photo of this show
towel,
with more information, here: http://www.yourantiques.com/ybtowel.html

The John S. Yoder Home
When the Amish Heritage Foundation moved the Yoder Home to
a new location
in Sugarcreeek back in May of 1995, we had three goals in mind:
(1) to
preserve the 1869 Amish post and beam structure, one of Sugarrcreek's
first
homes, for posterity;
(2) to restore the Yoder Home nearly as possible to its original
1869 state
to give visitors a look at a genuine Amish home; and
(3) to create an Amish Archives Room to hold, preserve and display
Amish
and Yoder Family memorabilia.
After nearly three years of hard work we are getting closer
to our dream
and hope to open this summer to our first visitors.
Moving the 92 ton structure cost over $18,000. We palletized
the old
sandstone foundation and with the help of several Amish masonry
gangs,
erected a new basement and dropped the Yoder Home upon it. We
also built a
full length front porch with a basement beneath, to hide our restrooms
and
heating plant. We installed a new slate roof on the porch; put
a brick
floor in the old basement and built brick sidewalks from red solid
floor
bricks. We completely stripped the interior rooms of updated woodwork
and
six layers of wallpaper; removed several newer interior walls
and painted
the exterior siding. Much of this work
was done by volunteer labor.
Currently, we will be patching plaster and drywalling where
necessary. We
will replace four bad windows. Painting will follow.
We will then begin to furnish the kitchen, parlor and a bedroom
before we
open in early summer.
Our funds are nearly exhausted. We hope there are those in
the Yoder
Freundschaft and others who could help us in our endeavor. All
gifts are
tax-free and will be gratefully acknowledged. Our mailing address
is: The
Amish Heritage Foundattion,
Box 704, Sugarcreek, OH 44681.
Thank you,
Blaine F. Miller, Secretary-Treasurer

published Masthof Press; RR 1 Box 20; Morgantown, PA 19543.
Title: "Where's Momma?, The Story of Mabel (Smucker) Yoder.
Written by her daughter Marion Delgrange of VA. This is a
wonderful book, I received a copy as a gift from one of Mabel's
granddaughters. It speaks well of the love and caring that
is present in the Yoder families. This is not an advertisement
for the book, I have no connections to Mastof publishing, nor
the Yoder family. I simply enjoyed the book and thought Yoder
families
might also enjoy it. Thank you. Betty Burdan

Subject: Re: Yoder recipes
I'm sending my favorite Yoder recipe -- it came from my great-grandpa
when
he was 95 years old.
John Harvey Yoder (b. 11 July 1881)
1890 Corn meal mush
First, go to the corn crib and get a bushel or two of yellow
corn ears.
Put them in the oven and heat them until parched a bit. Shell
off the
grain and take to the mill where it is stone ground. When you're
ready to
cook mush, you get the stick you keep for stirring it. If you
can't find
it, cut a piece of hard wood about fifteen inches long and shaped
like this
=====<O>. Have plenty of dry wood to make the fire. Take
an iron kettle
holding 2-1/2 gallons. Fill it about 3/4 full with clean water.
Add some
salt. When water begins to boil, take stick in one hand and with
the other
drop meal slowly into the kettle, stirring all the time. Add corn
meal
until it is thick enough to say "Pouff" when it boils.
Let it boil a
little while but do not have enough fire under it to burn it to
the kettle.
When it has boiled enough, you dip it out into rectangular pans
about 2
inches deep. You eat what you want for supper with milk or butter
and what
you have in pans you have for breakfast. Cut in slices and fry
golden
brown on both sides and eat with maple syrup or apple butter,
or better
yet, liver pudding. If it has been properly cooked you will find
in the
bottom of the kettle a crust almost 1/2 inch thick. This we liked
to eat
right from the kettle, taken out with a large spoon or pancake
turner.
His recipe was published in Dutch Kettle Cookbook - Recipes
from family and
friends, by Adella Brunk Kanagy, 1977.

Slight correction... the Henry Yoder family record was found
in the Bible
of his granddaughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Daniel) Beachy and her husband.
It
was on a loose sheet placed in that Bible. The present owner received
the
Bible a couple years ago and has only recently discovered what
this page
represents... Keep posted for more details....

The following was seem on another family mailing list and is
a good warning for Yoders
as well:
------------
Hello every one. They are at it again. That infamous company that
promises
to send you your coat of arms and family history is sending out
mass e-mail
offers again. This time they don't give their name or where they
are from,
just 2 links to their web site. But it is still them. DO NOT FALL
FOR THIS
GARBAGE !!
-------------
For years the YNL has warned readers against "Beatrice Bailey"
of "Bath, Ohio" and other
such outfits which have periodically flooded the mails with bogus
"(fill in your family
name here) Books" or crests, or whatever.... looks like these
same kinds of outfits are
following us into the world of electronic mail...be forewarned
and look with care at any
such offers.

OK, Chris. Thanks for the welcome into the club. This isn't
exactly the
short form but it's apparently who I am, Yoder-wise. I've edited
away the
non-Yoder ancestry and wives, so it's just a name trace. I tried
to leave
the wives in but it became too confusing for introductory e-mail.
Note,
however, that Samuel S Yoder of the YR1 line married Elizabeth
Yoder of the
YR2 line, so I have them both. ( The numbers refer to RINs used
in the PAF
software files.)

Subject: Amos Yoder of Darke Co, OH
Further Evidence of Links
Amos Yoder (1797-1878) who is buried in the Oakland Cemetery,
Adams Twp.,
Darke Co, OH, has been one of our "missing links". We
knew that he was
born in Pa, and that he married Mary Cain in Miami Co, Oh on 1/3/1841.
Thanks to Joe Bosserman, we learned a couple months ago that Amos
had a
first wife named Rebecca _____ d. 6/3/1838 age 30, buried at the
Sugar
Grove Cemetery, Miami Co., Oh.
For some time we have been looking at the Pennsylvania Yoders
of
Tulpehocken Twp, Berks County who vanished right about at the
time Yoders
started appearing in Miami County....
Amos is not a common Yoder name, particularly so pre-1850.
In the 1830
Census there is an Amos, age 20-30 with a wife and single daughter
under
5 years of age living in Tulpehocken Twp . Relooking at notes
taken by
Dick Yoder of Bechtelsville many years ago...I just found the
following:
"Elizabeth Yoder born 4/2/1830 bapt. 4/12/1830, parents
Amos and Rebecca
Yotter" - Christ Lutheran Church, Tulpehocken (now Marion)
Twp.
This is further evidence that the Miami Co Yoders moved there
from
Tulpehocken Twp...the senior Yoders of whom in 1830 was named
"Abraham",
age 60-70 years and his wife of the same age (possibly the missing
OH135?)
(See "AV" and "AN" in the unlink2.doc file)

Hello all,
This is the first time I,ve posted my Yoder ancestry - I,ve
seen
several roll calls and thought it was about time to do something
about
it. I,m also working on Conrad, Ernst, Headings, Hooley, Hostetler,
King, Liechty, Mast, Miller, Plank, Roth, Troyer, Wenger, Zook
and their
various permutations.
I live in Wilsonville, OR - not too many miles from Yoder,
OR! I have
four ancestral lines in my Yoder genealogy as follows:
(1) Yoder (ca 1695-1742) m "widow" Barbara (ca 1698-?)
(2) Christian Yoder (ca 1722-1772) m Barbara Beiler (?) (ca 1723-1781)
(3) Elizabeth Yoder (ca 1749-1791) m Christian Hertzler (ca

(4) Esther Hertzler (1788-1861) m Christian Yoder (1784-1850)
