Notes for DANIEL YODER:
David, the fifth son, was born June 18th, 1780, and was a
soldier of war of 1812. After peace was
restored he married Christopher Klein's
daughter, a niece of Conrad Yoder's wife, and settled on the
mountain land near Mountain Grove church,
where some of the old apple trees are
yet standing. He sold this farm
to his brother-in-law, John Baker, a

ABRALON
Apparently Absolom threatened a Moses Rees/Reas with a gun
and sort of beat him up - can't read much. Then he apparently took a piss in
public - thereby exposing himself. Then he and son David apparently stole 10
pigs and tried to alter their marks on the ears. Got $300 fine for that.
Mentions a John Richardson, Moses Yoder the mysterious, Ann Yoder, Sarah Yoder
and Samuel Christy. Robert Covert too
Seems old Absalom with the help of one of his kids stole
several hogs and attempted to alter themarks on their ears. Got fined $300 for
that. This John Richardson is in your files. Still haven't figured out this
Moses Yoder signature or document. He signed the damned thing but doesn't
appear in any census

Regimental History
Thirty-sixth Infantry IOWA
( 3 years )
Thirty-sixth
Infantry. ACol., Charles W. Kittredge; Lieut. -Col. Franc es M. Drake, Majs.,
Thomas C. Woodward, Augustus H. Hamilton.
The 36th
rendezvoused at Keokuk in Sept., 1862, and was regularlly mustered into the U.
S. service on Oct. 4. It left Keokuk
about Nov. 10, going down the river on two steamers, and made its first landing
at Columbus, Ky., in the night, to assist in repelling an expected attack of
the enemy.
It reached Helena,
Ark., Dec. 31 and remained there until the latter part of the following
February, when it embarked on steamers in the Yazoo Pass expedition, returning
to Helena, April 8, the expedition comprising just 40 days and nights in the
wilderness. The regiment remained here,
making occasional forays into the country, until Aug. 11, 1863 when it formed
part of Gen. Steele's army in his march to Little Rock. That place was captured on Sept. 10, and the
regiment entered the city two days afterward, encamping in the outskirts on the
north side.
In March, 1864, it
was in the expedition under command of Gen. Steele, the objective point being
Camden, at the head of navigation on the Ouchita river, and the 36th bore the
brunt of the battle on this march, at Elkin's Ferry. It took part also in the battle of Prairie
d'Ane, where the advance of the army skirmished for 12 miles and finally found
the Confederates so strongly posted as to require three days to dislodge them.
In April the
regiment was in the brigade detailed to guard 240 wagons back to Pine Bluff,
upon which expedition was the battle of Marks' Mills occured and the regiment
was captured. About 100 of the 36th left
behind were in the battle of Jenkins' Ferry.
Those of the regiment who were not captured remained at Little Rock till
early in March, 1865, when they were removed to St. Charles on the White River,
and in May, to Devaill's Bluff, where they were mustered out Aug. 24, 1865.
The regiment
recieved some 70 recruits in March, 1864, at Little Rock, and had in it from
first to last 1,205 officers and men.
Its losses were: deaths from battle, 70, deaths from disease, 233;
wounded 146; discharged, 191.

Notes for HAMILTON BALES:
obit from Davis co website/cemeteries - ANSWERS THE CALL
To Him above to whom we all must answer, Ham Bales dies of
paralysis.
On Sat, 27 Apr, Was an Old time Pioneer of Davis Co., Came
to Iowa in 1847.
Died at his home
three quarters of a mile south of Floris, his death was caused by a second
stroke of paralysis which overtook him on Thurs, and his first stroke was in
Oct. The second carried the faithful
pioneer to his reward above. The funeral
services were held at his home Sunday, conducted by Rev Sprage. The remains being laid to rest in the Dutch
Flat Cemetery.
He was born 5 Jul 1841, in Jennings Co., IN, and when but 6
years old he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Davis Co, where he
has since resided. At the time of his
death his age was 65 years, 3 months and 5 days.
He leaves to mourn
his loss a wife and his only son, O.K. Bales, who resides on the old home
place. Mr. Bales had retired from the
farm about three years ago and was endeavoring to enjoy himself in his old age
when death overtook him. Besides his
wife and son he leaves behind him four brothers, Jacob, Mose, Solomon and Lee,
of which all reside in Davis Co., but Mose, who resides in Ottumwa. Also two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Yoder of
Eddyville and Mrs. Elizabeth Christy of Davis Co.
The funeral
services were short only being a few songs as he did not care for a long
service which he explained in this way that it only made more tears, sorrow for
those left behind and that the song service would do just as well. He was a faithful member of his church, a
good neighbor and citizen and his demise will be greatly missed by his friends.

A long and

scene at the Baker Nursing Home in Mexico,

Floris, Mrs Rosa McCormick of Ottumwa, Mrs Opal Mumper of Los Angeles, Calif.,

Mrs. Daugherty was a
true mother, a good neighbor and one who was constantly engaged in little

Her departure will be greatly mourned and her presence deeply missed by
the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, distant relatives and
friends.
